BACKGROUND
May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich cultures, history, and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). AAPIs have made significant contributions to the United States that helped shape our country into what it is today. However, AAPIs were often in the face of cruel racism and prejudice. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light long-simmering anti-Asian racism, and there has been a disturbing increase in anti-Asian violence and crime. In the past two months, many of our Belmont AAPI neighbors and friends participated in protests, rallies, and public speeches to express concerns about the worsening anti-Asian racism in our country.

WHO WE ARE
We are a group of Belmont Public School (BPS) parents. We believe that now is a critical moment to raise the voice and visibility of our AAPI residents to build a more inclusive and diverse community in Belmont. We also believe that an inclusive curriculum design, with the incorporation of AAPI history, will allow students to explore and understand the diverse perspectives of AAPI contributions and the difficult struggles they have grappled with throughout American history. To achieve these long-term goals, as the first step, we work towards making the AAPI Heritage Month celebration a tradition in Belmont by organizing various educational activities in our schools and community.

WHY DO WE NEED YOUR DONATION
As a newly formed volunteer group, we are proud to have completed these three projects successfully in a short period of two months. However, more funds are needed to keep the momentum going. Your donation will support sustaining Belmont AAPI Heritage celebration activities, such as donating AAPI books to schools and Belmont Public Library, displaying AAPI posters, hosting AAPI seminar series and reading clubs, and making the AAPI Heritage Month celebration a Belmont tradition every year going forward. Please consider making a donation to the Belmont Celebrates AAPI Heritage Fund.
WHAT IMPACT WILL YOUR DONATION MAKE?
$15 = one more AAPI book donation
$50 = one more AAPI poster display

OUR RECENT PROJECTS
AAPI BOOK DONATION TO BPS
With the generous support of $2,000 from the Belmont Chinese American Association (BCAA), we donated 200 AAPI books to BPS to meet schools’ teaching needs in May, 2021. |
AAPI POSTER DISPLAY AT BPS
We are working closely with BHS Asian American Club (AAC) to design and display posters about AAPI history, traditions, and role models at all of the six public schools in Belmont this month. |
AAPI READING LIST & BOOKMARK DESIGN
We have worked with experts to compile a list of 184 AAPI books at different reading levels which becomes an important resource for our future donations. The 120 book covers from this list are featured on a set of 10 beautifully designed bookmarks. |
